1. Background: India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. However, it did not have a permanent constitution at that time. Instead, it was governed by the Government of India Act (1935).

2. Formation of the Constituent Assembly: To draft a constitution for India, the Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, and the assembly worked diligently to draft and adopt the Constitution of India.

3. Adoption of the Constitution: The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on January 26, 1950.

This date was chosen to commemorate the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress in 1929 when the demand for complete independence was made. On this day, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj, or complete self-rule, as its goal.

4. Transition to a Republic: The adoption of the constitution marked India’s transition from a British Dominion to a sovereign democratic republic.
